I recently had a discussion with a potential web design client; who had mentioned that he was approached by a web design firm representative who was looking to drum up some business for his company. This gentleman was offered an opportunity to have a website created for his business for only $500 per year.

$500 PER YEAR???!!!

That's right, $500 a year for a website! Perhaps, to some, this sounds like a really good bargain — but trust me, there is a much better (and far less-expensive) way to get your own website. The best analogy I could come up with to describe this business model would be like hiring a roofing company to re-roof your home — and then paying them an annual fee after it's been installed. You wouldn't pay an annual subscription fee for a roof you've already paid for, so why would you do the same for a website? It's your intellectual property and you should treat it as such... your own property.

Look, having a website for your business, organization, or personal use shouldn't cost you a lot of money. Nor should it continue to be an expensive venture. The only fees that you should be paying for are those of the web hosting service you choose and for domain name registration. The design and set up of your website should be a one-time charge. That's what sets my web design services apart from virtually every other web design firm.
